Many talk shows hosts, news affiliates, and Non-for-Profit Cancer Organizations are highlighting Ms. Angelina Jolie’s disclosure of her risk reducing (prophylactic) mastectomy surgery this week. I commend Ms. Jolie for announcing this very personal decision to the public. Her actions are heroic for herself and for others who face this decision and disease.
Having risk reducing (prophylactic) mastectomy surgery is not an easy decision for anyone to make. This choice does not come on a whim. One must research their options and make reasonable decisions on the facts one finds. Each breast cancer diagnosis is unique as the person who has it.
Ms. Jolie did her research. She found the facts she needed. She took the BRCA1 and BRCA2 genetic tests because of her mother’s past medical history with cancer. Her genetic results of the BRCA1 confirmed she had inherited the harmful mutations of the gene that can give a woman a higher risk of developing breast cancer. (Women with harmful mutations in either BRCA1 or BRCA2 have risk of breast cancer that is about five times the normal risk, and a risk of ovarian cancer that is about ten to thirty times normal.purchase dapoxetine online buy dapoxetine safely) Thus, the risk of her developing breast cancer is very high – over 80%. Therefore, she made a personal, logical, and reasonable -not radical- decision to have a double mastectomy.
It is rare to test positive in the BRCA1 and BRCA2 genetic tests. However, if a woman carries the high-risk mutations in these genes, it can significantly increase one’s chances in developing breast cancer. Even though, we are focusing on percentages and probable cause that breast cancer may or may not happen, it is sometimes hard to separate our emotions to make logical decisions about these odds. Let me present this thought in another way. Let’s say you decide to walk out your front door of your home to walk across a street at a certain point where research has shown that a person has a 80+% chance of being hit by a car. Would you walk across the street at that point or search for another navigation plan where one can go across the street safely? Let us take this same scenario again, except now because of research a stop sign or stoplight was inserted at the same point on the street to reduce the odds of a person crossing the street from being hit from 80+% to less than 5%. Would you walk across the street at that point now because you have better odds of crossing the street without being hit? Which scenario would you most likely choose to get across the street? Logically, it would be in everyone’s best interest to choose the scenario that reduces the unsafe factors that allow us to walk across the street safely. Whether it is choosing the simple scenario of walking across the street or determining the best action plan to prevent breast cancer, I would definitely choose the plan that gives me the most protection. Ms. Jolie opted for that plan as well.
A prophylactic mastectomy is not a fun trip. I had a prophylactic mastectomy on my second breast a year after I had my unilateral (one) mastectomy. For me, it was more challenging mentally to accept this choice than when I lost my first breast to cancer. Because of my medical history and the presence of hyperplasia cells in my second breast, my chances of developing cancer in the breast increased tremendously. I had to make a logical, reasonable, educated, and personal decision on what I needed to do for my health. I decided to remove the second breast. It was the right choice and plan for me. However, it was a very hard decision to give up my healthy breast that did not have cancer!
Thus, when the news outlets announced Ms. Jolie’s disclosure about her prophylactic mastectomy, I immediately supported her. I understood why she made her decision. I also felt the emotional and physical pain that she must have endured these past few months. Her disclosure will help many to make better-informed decisions for anyone affected by breast cancer.
Those who question her decision and call it radical do not have an understanding of how breast cancer can work. They are ignorant and need to be informed. No one should pass judgment on what one should do unless one has traveled that road. Cancer is a very personal journey with no right or wrong answers yet stretches far enough to affect every family member. Brad Pitt’s efforts to help and support her will be needed throughout her journey in the future. He also has the opportunity to be a role model that sends a message to other men that they need to help and support their spouses and significant others when breast cancer strikes. I hope that Ms. Jolie and Mr. Pitt will support each other throughout this journey because the consequences do not end with this decision. The process of preventing breast cancer from returning requires many adjustments and some new directions in one’s personal life. Either way, everyone involved needs to proceed positively, optimistically, and aggressively against this disease.
Thus, I want to thank Ms. Jolie for shedding more light on this terrible disease. It is not a selective disease. Cancer can happen to anyone. I pray research finds a cure soon. God Bless you and your family Ms. Jolie!
And as Always, MARCH FORTH!
